Africa50 is an infrastructure investment platform that contributes to Africa's growth by developing and investing in bankable projects, catalysing public sector capital, and mobilizing private sector funding.
Africa50 has raised over US$1.3 billion so far from 34 African governments, the African Development Bank, and institutional investors, and intends to reach a target capitalization of US$5 billion by 2030. Africa50 has an independent investment process and seeks to generate commercial risk adjusted returns for its investments across four core infrastructure sectors: energy (including power generation and related parts of the value chain), midstream gas, transportation, ICT, health and education.
Purpose of the Role
Reporting to the CFO, the Senior Director, Portfolio Management & Performance, is responsible for providing comprehensive oversight of Africa50's investment portfolio performance, monitoring, valuation and reporting.
The role serves as a key source of portfolio insight for the Senior Leadership Team (“SLT”), the Investment Committee and the Board, ensuring that portfolio performance, risks, valuations and emerging issues are clearly identified, analyzed and communicated.
The Senior Director will work closely with Investment Teams, Risk and Legal to ensure the integrity of portfolio information, lead and challenge performance and valuation assumptions, identify opportunities for value creation and support effective management of the portfolio throughout the investment lifecycle.
Principal Responsibilities
Portfolio Management, Performance and Monitoring
• Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive portfolio management and performance framework supporting portfolio monitoring, valuation, analysis and reporting.
• In coordination with Investment Teams, contribute to the active management of Africa50 Group portfolio (direct investment, investment companies and funds – “Portfolio”), focused on implementation of value-creation initiatives and performance improvement (analysis of portfolio performance against investment cases / business plans / budget and relevant benchmarks, identification of key drivers of performance and underperformance, monitoring of investment risks and mitigants, etc.).
• Provide an integrated, forward-looking view of Portfolio performance, including market insight, key trends, emerging risks, expected distributions, liquidity and other matters relevant to Portfolio allocation and management, as well as strategic decision-making.
• Lead the preparation and delivery of Portfolio Review meetings for the Investment Committee, ensuring that portfolio performance, valuation, key risks, key developments and required actions are clearly presented.
• Monitor portfolio concentration and key portfolio-level exposures and highlight areas requiring management or Investment Committee attention.
Valuation, Portfolio Analytics and Reporting
• Serve as a senior point of reference within the Africa50 Group for portfolio performance, valuation and portfolio analytics.
• Lead and oversee the periodic valuation of portfolio investments, ensuring robust methodologies, appropriate challenge and consistency with applicable policies and standards.
• Ensure the quality, consistency and integrity of valuation assumptions and underlying portfolio data.
• Establish and maintain high-quality periodic portfolio reporting for SLT and the Board. Ensure that portfolio reporting provides both a clear historical view of performance and a forward-looking assessment of key opportunities, risks and issues.
• Provide timely analysis and recommendations on material portfolio developments and matters requiring escalation or decision.
• Establish robust data standards, processes and controls to ensure the availability, accuracy, consistency and integrity of investment and portfolio information.
• Work with Investment Teams to ensure the timely and accurate maintenance of portfolio data and key investment information.
• Drive continuous improvement, automation and enhancement of portfolio management, reporting and analytical processes.
• Facilitate effective collaboration between Finance, Investment, Risk and Legal teams on matters relating to portfolio performance, investment data, monitoring and valuation.
Leadership
• Lead, develop and mentor the Portfolio Management & Performance team, where applicable, establishing clear objectives, high-performance standards and a culture of analytical rigour and collaboration.
• Build strong relationships across Africa50 and exercise effective influence across functions and investment teams.
• Promote consistent portfolio management practices and continuous improvement across the Africa50.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications & Experience
• Typically, 17–20+ years of relevant experience in investment management, infrastructure investment, private equity, development finance, asset management, investment banking, finance or strategy/transaction advisory.
• Significant experience in portfolio management, performance management, investment monitoring and/or valuation, ideally within an private equity, infrastructure investor, DFI, sovereign wealth fund or similar institution.
• Demonstrate experience working with senior investment professionals, Investment Committees and Boards.
• Strong understanding of infrastructure investment, development and financing in emerging markets, with experience in Africa strongly preferred.
• Strong financial modelling, valuation and analytical capabilities.
• Financial engineering, finance, economics or related academic background; MBA or equivalent postgraduate qualification would be advantageous.
• Demonstrated experience in improving portfolio management, reporting, data or organisational processes.
