As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we have set ourselves the goal of making substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitalisation. In doing so, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the foundation of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open innovation culture and our motivated, international teams, we work on positioning AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and on making a positive contribution to business and society.
Our Center Health & Bioresources is awarding a master's thesis at the Vienna location. The Molecular Diagnostics research group develops innovative technologies for next-generation molecular diagnostics. The research focus is on the development of electrochemical biosensors, novel surface functionalisations and microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems for the rapid and sensitive detection of nucleic acids. Interdisciplinary approaches from chemistry, materials science, electrochemistry and molecular biology are combined to enable point-of-care diagnostics for the medical, veterinary and environmental analysis applications of the future.
As part of our team, you will work on your master's thesis within the framework of our research projects (e.g.:
SmartSens
,
FlexDNA
,
NanoPredict
). Together with our interdisciplinary research team, you will work on the development of novel electrochemical biosensors for nucleic acid detection. The focus of the work is on the investigation of surface chemistry, the development of innovative electrochemical detection methods as well as the integration of these technologies into point-of-care systems.
Master's thesis "Electrochemical biosensors for next-generation nucleic acid detection"
CENTER FOR HEALTH & BIORESOURCES
Your tasks:
During your master's thesis, you will be individually supervised by experienced scientists and work closely with our interdisciplinary research team. In doing so, you will gain practical experience in the development of electrochemical biosensors as well as in the use of state-of-the-art
methods of surface chemistry
(automatic dispenser systems, various characterisation tools such as SEM, AFM, FTIR or Raman), sensor technology (multichannel electrodes) and molecular diagnostics.
You will learn to work on scientific questions independently – from experimental planning through experimental execution to the evaluation and scientific documentation of the results.
Through access to modernly equipped laboratories and innovative technologies, you will continuously expand your technical and methodological competencies.
Your master's thesis has a pronounced training character and offers you the opportunity to actively participate in current research projects and to gain valuable experience in an internationally recognised research environment.
Literature research on the topics of surface chemistry, electrochemical biosensors, microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip and molecular diagnostics.
Investigation and optimisation of sensor surface chemistry for electrochemical nucleic acid detection.
Evaluation of novel electrochemical detection concepts
Characterisation of sensor and microfluidic materials with regard to their compatibility with nucleic acid amplification (isothermal amplification or PCR) on the chip.
Experimental work using state-of-the-art electrochemical and surface characterisation methods.
Scientific documentation, data analysis and presentation of the results.
As an Ingenious Partner, you stand out through:
Ongoing master's degree in chemistry (preferred), physics, materials science, or a comparable scientific-technical degree programme.
Good knowledge in at least one of the following areas: surface chemistry, electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, biosensor technology, or microfluidics
Interest in experimental research as well as in the development of innovative technologies for molecular diagnostics and point-of-care systems.
Enjoyment of scientific work as well as of the planning, execution and evaluation of experimental investigations.
Programming skills (e.g. Python or MATLAB, or AI-supported) as well as experience in data analysis are an advantage, but not a requirement.
Independent, structured and careful way of working as well as high commitment and ability to work in a team.
Good knowledge of English in spoken and written form (at least B2); knowledge of German is an advantage.
What you can expect:
Remuneration of EUR 775.71 gross per month for 15 hours per week in accordance with the collective agreement.
Intensive supervision and professional support by our experienced scientists
Highlights of our employee benefits include a canteen with meal subsidy, organic coffee, tea and fruit baskets, health prevention offers as well as an occupational physician, additional days off for special life events, leisure subsidies), a voucher programme, sports, cultural and team events as well as many other benefits.
At AIT, we create an inclusive and family-friendly working environment that promotes equal opportunities and specifically expands diversity in the workforce as well as in leadership positions. Among other things, we are committed to increasing the proportion of women in the company and therefore particularly welcome applications from women.
Please submit your application documents consisting of CV, cover letter, study confirmation and certificates (Transcript of Records) as well as proof of identity, online.
